Additional Information
Martha Louise Black (1866-1957). Born in Chicago, Illinois, Martha Black immigrated to Canada during the Yukon Gold Rush, and became one of the pioneering settlers of the Yukon. She made her living by staking gold mining claims, and running a saw mill. In 1935 she was elected to Canada's Parliament, becoming the second women ever to be elected to the House of Commons. Her great love of botany and the Yukon led her to be awarded the Order of British Empire for 'cultural and social contributions to the Yukon.' Last update: 30 December 2022
